SUMMARY:Men's Club Purim 5k
DESCRIPTION:Men’s Club Purim 5K to Benefit the CNS Food Pantry\nSunday\, March 15 | 9:00-11:00am | Graham Oaks Nature Park\nRegister Here\n\n$36 per entry | Costumes and groggers encouraged!\nGraham Oaks Nature Park: 11825 SW Wilsonville Rd\, Wilsonville\, OR 97070\n\nWhether you’re a seasoned runner\, a casual walker\, or someone who’d rather cheer from home— you’re invited to join us for the CNS Men’s Club 5K Fundraiser\, supporting our Food Pantry. \nThis is a feel-good event where participation is what matters most. You can run\, walk\, or even go “virtually” (pay the fee\, but walk/run at the time and location of your choosing). However you join\, you’ll be making a meaningful difference — and yes\, everyone who participates gets a medal! \nIf you would prefer to sponsor a participant rather than participate yourself\, you also have the option of making a donation in honor of that individual. This is another way that you can support your local community and the Food Pantry. \nFor our top 3 finishers\, we’ve got special bragging rights in the form of customized pint glasses for a celebratory drink after crossing the finish line. \nLet’s move together — in person or in spirit — for food\, community\, and a bit of fun. \n\nKids in strollers are welcome at no charge.\nAll participants under 18 years of age must be supervised by an adult.\nPets and alcohol are not permitted in the park.\n\nQuestions? SUMMARY:Adult Ed: Introduction to Talmud Study with Rabbi Emily Kapor-Mater
DESCRIPTION:Introduction to Talmud Study with Rabbi Emily Kapor-Mater\nSundays\, beginning February 1 | 9:30-10:30am (No Classes Feb 15\, Mar 22\, Mar 29\, and Apr 5)\nRSVP Here\n\n\nThe Talmud stands at the center of Rabbinic Judaism. While often associated with law\, it is also a richly layered work containing narrative\, interpretation\, scientific speculation\, and moments of striking strangeness. Over the course of ten weeks\, this class will engage a curated selection of classic Talmudic passages. We will learn about the history and structure of the Talmud\, explore how Talmudic arguments work\, and meet the rabbis whose voices continue to resonate in Jewish tradition today. All material will be taught in English translation\, with the original Hebrew and Aramaic available for those who wish to engage them. \nRabbi Emily Kapor-Mater is the founding rabbi of the Portland Open Beit Midrash. Her rabbinic work centers on affirming and celebrating the lives and identities of the people who inhabit the margins of the Jewish community\, drawing on innovative yet deeply rooted approaches to Jewish law\, liturgy\, and ritual.

SUMMARY:Adult Ed: Why the Golem? with Leora Troper

Which one was the “real” golem? And why is there such a proliferation of modern golems\, from the Simpsons to Minecraft\, not to mention the growing number of golem novels for adults and picture books for kids. Was Superman a golem? What about AI? \nJoin this course to explore the golem story – it’s roots and how and why it has resonated so strongly in the modern imagination. With brief lecture\, chevruta (paired learning)\, whole group discussion\, and even a golem craft project during the last weeks\, we will explore a wide variety of sources.

SUMMARY:Scholar-in-Residence 2026 with Rabbi Danny Nevins: Torah & Technology
DESCRIPTION:Scholar-in-Residence 2026 with Rabbi Danny Nevins: Torah & Technology\nMay 8-10\, 2026\nRegister Here\nCongregation Neveh Shalom and the Suher Family would be honored to have you join us for:\nThe 9th Annual Yoni Suher (z”l) Scholar-in-Residence \n\nSCHEDULE OF EVENTS: \nFriday\, May 8\, 7:30pm* | Dinner and Talk\nDon’t Delegate Your Soul\nCan You Outsource the Soul? Artificial intelligence can write\, analyze\, recommend\, and decide. As machines begin to perform tasks that once defined human judgment and creativity\, Jewish tradition invites a deeper question: what\, exactly\, belongs to us alone? Drawing on classical Torah sources and contemporary technological dilemmas\, this session explores the boundary between assistance and abdication. Technology can extend human ability. It cannot replace human responsibility. \n*Following the 6:15pm Kabbalat Shabbat Service \nSaturday\, May 9\, 7:00pm | Dessert and Talk\nWhat Is “Natural”? Torah\, Biotechnology\, and the Future of Life\nFrom gene editing to lab-grown meat\, modern biotechnology is reshaping the boundaries between species\, bodies\, and even the definition of food itself. As science gains the ability to modify DNA and grow meat without animals\, long-standing assumptions about what is “natural” begin to shift. \nDrawing on classical sources and contemporary halakhic debate\, this session explores how Jewish law responds when the categories it relies on – animal and non-animal\, natural and artificial\, permitted and forbidden – become less clear. When life can be engineered and food can be grown\, the questions extend far beyond what is on the plate. They touch on how Torah understands creation\, human intervention\, and the limits of innovation. \nSunday\, May 10\, 9:30 AM | Mother’s Day Brunch and Talk\nWhen Does Life End? Torah\, Medicine\, and the Definition of Death \nIf a person’s heart is still beating\, are they alive? What if a machine is breathing for them\, but they will never breathe on their own again? \nModern medicine can sustain the body long after the brain has ceased to function\, forcing us to confront a question that Jewish tradition has wrestled with for centuries: when\, exactly\, does life end? \nDrawing on classical halakhic sources and contemporary medical realities\, this session explores the deeply contested boundary between life and death. From ancient debates about the “breath of life” to modern dilemmas around brain death and organ donation\, we will examine how Jewish law navigates one of the most urgent and ethically charged questions of our time—and what it demands of us when a life hangs in the balance. \nComplimentary food or meals are provided at each talk with RSVP. \nThis event\, including all meals\, is underwritten by the Stan and Ethel Katz Briller Jewish Education Fund of the Oregon Jewish Community Foundation and the Yoni Suher Fund of Congregation Neveh Shalom.
