SUMMARY:Scholar-in-Residence 2026 with Rabbi Danny Nevins: Torah & Technology
DESCRIPTION:Scholar-in-Residence 2026 with Rabbi Danny Nevins: Torah & Technology\nMay 8-10\, 2026\nRegister Here\nCongregation Neveh Shalom and the Suher Family would be honored to have you join us for:\nThe 9th Annual Yoni Suher (z”l) Scholar-in-Residence \n\nSCHEDULE OF EVENTS: \nFriday\, May 8\, 7:30pm* | Dinner and Talk\nDon’t Delegate Your Soul\nCan You Outsource the Soul? Artificial intelligence can write\, analyze\, recommend\, and decide. As machines begin to perform tasks that once defined human judgment and creativity\, Jewish tradition invites a deeper question: what\, exactly\, belongs to us alone? Drawing on classical Torah sources and contemporary technological dilemmas\, this session explores the boundary between assistance and abdication. Technology can extend human ability. It cannot replace human responsibility. \n*Following the 6:15pm Kabbalat Shabbat Service \nSaturday\, May 9\, 7:00pm | Dessert and Talk\nWhat Is “Natural”? Torah\, Biotechnology\, and the Future of Life\nFrom gene editing to lab-grown meat\, modern biotechnology is reshaping the boundaries between species\, bodies\, and even the definition of food itself. As science gains the ability to modify DNA and grow meat without animals\, long-standing assumptions about what is “natural” begin to shift. \nDrawing on classical sources and contemporary halakhic debate\, this session explores how Jewish law responds when the categories it relies on – animal and non-animal\, natural and artificial\, permitted and forbidden – become less clear. When life can be engineered and food can be grown\, the questions extend far beyond what is on the plate. They touch on how Torah understands creation\, human intervention\, and the limits of innovation. \nSunday\, May 10\, 9:30 AM | Mother’s Day Brunch and Talk\nWhen Does Life End? Torah\, Medicine\, and the Definition of Death \nIf a person’s heart is still beating\, are they alive? What if a machine is breathing for them\, but they will never breathe on their own again? \nModern medicine can sustain the body long after the brain has ceased to function\, forcing us to confront a question that Jewish tradition has wrestled with for centuries: when\, exactly\, does life end? \nDrawing on classical halakhic sources and contemporary medical realities\, this session explores the deeply contested boundary between life and death. From ancient debates about the “breath of life” to modern dilemmas around brain death and organ donation\, we will examine how Jewish law navigates one of the most urgent and ethically charged questions of our time—and what it demands of us when a life hangs in the balance. \nComplimentary food or meals are provided at each talk with RSVP. \nThis event\, including all meals\, is underwritten by the Stan and Ethel Katz Briller Jewish Education Fund of the Oregon Jewish Community Foundation and the Yoni Suher Fund of Congregation Neveh Shalom.

DESCRIPTION:NOAR (3-5th) Water Balloon Battle\nSunday\, May 17 | 12:00-1:00pm\nRegister Here\n\n\n\nDid you know that it is a modern Israeli custom to have spirited water balloon battles during the holiday of Shavuot!? Water is an important element in the Jewish tradition\, having restorative & life-giving properties just like the Torah. We can connect to this element in so many ways: visiting a mikveh\, swimming in the ocean\, washing the dishes\, or even lobbing balloons (kindly) at our friends! \nWhat a fun way to celebrate the receiving of Torah & the end of our ALIYAH school year all in one go!! \nAll participants must bring a towel & a clean\, dry change of clothes! \nSnacks & beverages will be provided.

SUMMARY:Shavuot: Standing Together at Sinai—A Night of Learning for Our Whole Community
DESCRIPTION:Shavuot: Standing Together at Sinai—A Night of Learning for Our Whole Community\nThursday\, May 21 | 5:30-9:30pm | Portland Jewish Academy\nRegister Here\n\nJoin the community on Thursday\, May 21\, for a Shavuot Program and Dinner hosted at Portland Jewish Academy. \nPlease RSVP by Thursday\, May 14 so we can plan for everyone’s comfort. \n\n5:30-6:30pm Hands-on Shavuot Activities for Families (Students with parents/caregivers)\n6:30-7:15pm Dinner\n7:15-8:15pm Middle School/Teen Program (With Meg Bernstein)\n7:15-8:15pm Adult Learning Session 1\n\nAdult Learning Option 1 – Amy Katz: Talking Torah with Children\nAdult Learning Option 2 – Rabbi April Villarreal: The Day We Got the Torah Back: Shavuot is typically thought of as the giving and receiving of the Torah. However\, one Talmudic description suggests that it was almost snatched away by fearsome forces\, but in the end we prevailed. We’ll study this remarkable story in chavruta (with a learning partner)\, and through it come to a better understanding of Torah and our relationship to it.\n\n\n8:30-9:30pm Adult Learning Session 2\n\nAdult Learning Option 1 – Rabbi Oren: Standing at the Mountain or Under the Mountain?\nWhat really happened at Sinai? Through close reading of texts\, we’ll explore the enduring tension between divine love and divine pressure. The midrash imagines God holding the mountain above us—accept the Torah or else—raising a profound question: was revelation forced\, freely chosen\, or something in between? Together\, we’ll consider not only how our relationship to Torah may have begun\, but how we choose to stand today—willingly\, faithfully\, and with intention—at Sinai in our own lives.\nAdult Learning Option 2 – Mel Berwin: Ruth & Redemption\nAt the heart of the Book of Ruth\, which we traditionally read on Shavuot\, is a story about Redemption. In today’s world\, where we are faced daily with the rupture of norms and the shattering of our Jewish hearts\, what does redemption mean? What does it look like? We will delve into the Book of Ruth as well as other traditional and contemporary sources to gain a model for redemption and hope\, grounded in our texts.

DESCRIPTION:A Strong Foundation: Celebrating CNS & Honoring 70 Years of Foundation School\nSunday\, May 31\, 2026 | 5:00-9:00 pm\nRegister here\n\n\nIn the early 1950’s\, Rabbi Stampfer established a preschool at Ahavai Shalom that would become the Foundation School\, opening the door for young families to connect to Jewish learning\, identity\, and community. At a pivotal moment in American Jewish life\, this program helped shape lifelong relationships and connection to Jewish life and synagogue. \nFor generations\, Foundation School has nurtured children’s social\, emotional\, and intellectual growth while fostering a strong\, positive Jewish identity. Rooted in tradition and responsive to evolving needs\, it continues to serve as a welcoming “micro-community” for both children and parents-building meaningful connection that last a lifetime.
