A bit of history: United Synagogue Youth (USY) is the youth organization of United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism (USCJ). Founded in 1951, USY operates mainly in the United States and Canada. The primary goal of the organization is to bring Jewish teens closer to Judaism and Israel through learning and social interaction. USY is comprised of 17 regions in total covering all of the US and Canada. Within each region events are held over the course of the academic year to bring separate Jewish communities together. Leading into USY is Jr. Kadima for 3rd-5th grade and Kadima for our 6th-8th graders.
From the USY International President:
“Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.”
Ruach. In Hebrew, it means “spirit.” In USY, it means much more. Ruach is everything from singing your heart out on the bus on USY on Wheels or on USY Israel Pilgrimage to 800 teens wildly jumping and dancing at Opening Session at International Convention. Ruach is our deep sense of sheer joy in celebrating our Judaism. It is our excitement to live Jewish lives. Come join us this year!
Kadima (grades 6-8)
Kadima meets locally for social, religious and community service-based activities, with a regional convention each year. Kadimaniks begin to take leadership in planning their own events.
USY (grades 9-12)
United Synagogue Youth is the official youth group of the Conservative Movement. USY meets for social, religious and community service-based activities, quarterly regional conventions and an annual international convention. Active USYers become leaders here in Portland, around the Northwest, and even on an international level. USY conducts summer programs based in various parts of the U.S., Europe and Israel.
