Cantor Eyal Bitton was raised in Kinshasa, Zaire and in Montreal, Canada, has a B.A. in Jewish Studies from McGill University, studied the cantorial arts under Cantor David Nemtzov and Cantor Benjamin Z. Maissner, and is a member of the Cantors Assembly. His liturgical compositions and arrangements have been performed in North America and in Europe. As a recording artist, he appears on his 2008 CD, High Holiday Memories: Timeless Moroccan & Sephardi Classics, and on Kol Nidre: New Visions, recorded live in Paris, France in 2017. Cantor Bitton is also a composer, lyricist, and playwright who has penned several musicals and oratorios which have been produced in Canada, the United States, Kenya, and China.

As a musical director, he served at various schools, community organizations, and synagogues, including Montreal’s Spanish & Portuguese Synagogue, Toronto’s Beth Tikvah Synagogue, and Toronto’s Zimriyah, a Jewish children’s choral festival featuring 500 students, which he led from 2008-2017. From 2009 to 2017, he served as Cantor of Beth Jacob Synagogue in Hamilton, Canada.

Cantor Bitton has been at Congregation Neveh Shalom since August 2017 and assumes normal cantorial duties, such as leading services, overseeing the b’nai mitzvah program and taking an active role in pastoral and life cycle matters. In addition, he helps develop a musical culture of depth and breadth that benefits not only Neveh Shalom, but the larger Portland Jewish community as well. He has special expertise in developing youth and adult choirs and brings his creativity to generate exciting new synagogue musical programs.

Cantor Eyal Bitton is married to the incredibly talented actress/singer Michèle Tredger and is both lucky and honored to be Miya’s father.
