A Welcoming Home for Portland’s Jewish Community
Congregation Neveh Shalom is a vibrant and energetic egalitarian Conservative congregation dedicated to providing a home for traditional observance, study, and gathering for Portland´s Jewish population. For 150 years, we have worked together to build a community of connection, a house for people of all backgrounds, orientations, genders, and viewpoints.
We serve our members through worship services, Jewish education for children and adults, social and cultural activities, special experiences for all ages, and life cycle events. Our clergy, staff and fellow congregants are here for you.
“37 years ago, my family and I arrived in the U.S. from the former Soviet Union. We joined synagogues in all of the cities we lived in prior to Portland. However, Neveh Shalom became a family for us as soon as we joined. The rabbi and community enveloped us with warmth and we have made many friends here.”
– Galina Kogan, CNS Member
Neveh Shalom was formed by the merger of two existing Conservative congregations in 1961. One of those original synagogues (Ahavai Shalom) was founded in 1869 and the other (Neveh Zedek) in 1895. We are the second oldest Jewish congregation in the Pacific Northwest and the oldest Conservative congregation on the West Coast. This history and longevity establish for our members a sense of respect for our traditions at the same time as we encourage new concepts and innovations.
To maintain a synagogue for the worship of God and the promulgation of the tenets, beliefs, and doctrines of Conservative Judaism; to maintain a religious school to educate Jewish youth about Judaism and the history and culture of the Jewish people; to maintain cemeteries for the burying and interment of the dead; and to engage in such additional religious, educational, social, recreational, and related activities as will strengthen, maintain, and perpetuate Judaism.
