Chevra Nichum: Comforting Friends is a congregational program that offers compassionate, peer-based support to members experiencing grief, rooted in the Jewish tradition of nichum aveilim.

About Chevra Nichum

At Congregation Neveh Shalom, we strive to care for one another through all of life’s moments—both joyful and difficult. Chevra Nichum: Comforting Friends is a congregational initiative grounded in compassion, connection, and sacred presence, offering gentle support to those experiencing grief.

Chevra Nichum Partners are fellow congregants who work closely with our clergy to walk alongside mourners throughout the Jewish journey of mourning. Rooted in the mitzvah of nichum aveilim (comforting mourners), Partners offer presence, guidance, and care through the traditional stages of mourning, including the time immediately following a death, shiva, sheloshim, the first year, yahrzeit, and other meaningful milestones.

Support may include handwritten notes, phone calls, emails, texts, or in-person visits, based on the mourner’s preferences. Partners may also offer accompaniment to minyan or Yizkor services, when appropriate and desired.

We recognize that grief is deeply personal, and participation is always optional. Whether support is welcomed immediately or later on, Chevra Nichum remains available to meet mourners where they are.

You are not alone. Together, we seek to be a community of comforters, companions, and sacred presence.
